A riveting story, told with economy and dark humour. Pacy, too, with an engaging style. Only thing is... I wanted more of it. I felt that it ran out too quickly. An expectation was built up that didn't seem quite to pay off. On the other hand, I finished thinking 'I've missed something here... I need to read it again.' Which is a good sign.

Thanks for flagging this, Alan. I'd have missed it otherwise. It's great - it takes me into a world I know little about, and stars a character whose 16th birthday is bigger and more significant than most teenagers'. I agree about the ending. I suspect there's some symbolism going on in the final paragraph - where the dirt in the glass represents the characters in the story - but it doesn't make for a completely satisfying ending. Good stuff, though.
