Human Rights or Party Fights?
Nick Clegg, the Deputy Prime Minister, was loudly cheered at last month’s Liberal Democrat conference in Birmingham, when he declared:
“Let me say something 'really clear' about the Human Rights Act.
In fact I’ll do it in words of one syllable: It is here to stay!”
However, Teresa May, has also made it 'really clear' that she would like to see the act, which incorporates the European Convention on Human Rights into UK law, scrapped to be replaced by home grown legislation.
If We don't want the Euro, we don't want European legislation, what do we want from Europe then?
It always makes me nervous when governments want to start 'shaping' legislation to suit their ethos.
Will Nick Clegg stand by his conference promise or will he prove to be just another career politician who will hold onto his position whatever promises he has to break to keep it?
