Irritating contradictions

Here's a short list.

Be grateful for what you've got,
strive to do better.
Have a social conscience,
family and friends are all that matter.
Thou shalt not kill,
join the army.
Nothing stays the same,
history repeats itself.
Never forget the past,
live in the moment.

Can anyone think of any other irritating contradictions or cliches that make discovering the meaning of life that bit more difficult?

I once wrote a story simply because my teacher said never use cliches. Strangely enough it was called 'cliches.'
I quite agree, and the more talk about it, over the years, the less of it there is. Oh dear, is that the time. I'm still in bed. Drinking whiskey now, and I haven't even got a cold. How slovenly! Never mind.

Put your best foot forward I always reckoned it should be 'better' as we only have two! They both face forward anyway, don't they? KJD

There's ome in Dutch which always makes me laugh (in a wry, astonished sorta way) Animal-friendly meat (diervriendelijk vlees) http://www.ukauthors.com
Violence isn't the answer, 'We are now at war with [insert oil-possessing country here]' Be yourself in the interview, 'A successful candidate will have a 2:1 in a non-humanity subject and three years experience in the industry.' You can get anything you want if you want it bad enough 'Get away from me, are you stalking me!?' ;)
Quite so ItsSteveDave. Regarding Humanities subjects, I earned myself a respectable degree in Philosophy and Literature about 20 years ago and, in all that time, nobody, I repeat, nobody, has ever asked me anything about it, not in an interview, not at the dinner table, nowhere. How dull things would be, don't you think, if we'd all studied economics or business studies.
