everything is illuminated

everyone should read 'everything is illuminated' - jonathan safran foer. much talked about book, but for good reason. it is so so beautiful, a really amazing first novel. and hilarious too, clever humour. if you have read 'invisible cities' by Italo Calvino you will definately like. says some poignant things about writing as well, and gorgeous lists...i tried to find a bit i could quote but theres too much. he's only a couple years older than me too (26) has inspired me muchly.

Saw a poster for this on a tube station wall. Underneath the title 'Everything is Illuminated' someone had written in biro "...except large portions of Iraq." Made me laugh.

the basic premise is that the 'hero'(jonathan safran foer) has a photo of a little girl who saved his grandparents from the nazi's and has gone to the Ukraine to try and find her, employing a Ukrainian guy (who writes him letters throughout book in fantastically bad english) to be his guide. it also jumps back in time to this jewish village, relating all the relationships of generations of people and the festivals and rituals they have. but its one of those books that when you say what its actually ABout, it doesn't really explain it as it covers so many things i guess. ah mr safran foer where are you? i could fall in love with someone who can write a book like that...!
