it's ok but nothing special. My personal favorite is Hearts in Atlantis, which is actually three novellas strung together. There's very little spooky stuff in it. It's more of a novel about growing up in America in the 60s and the affect the war had on people. Since that's my generation, it really hit home. For you it would probably be just a very long story. It's one of those 'you hadda be there' things.

The film outshines the story apparently.

I thought the Shawshank Redemption was a short story in one collections.

It is, flash...and yes, Liana, you got the right one. I didn't think it was exactly rubbish, but certainly nothing special. It usually comes with another story called Apt Pupil, which is much better.

lol.... Well, Apt Pupil is in my view much better than Shawshank, but i don't promise that you'll like it. Apparently it is being made into a movie. There's another story in that collection about some kids who find a dead body in the woods. That story was also made into a fairly decent movie about 10 years ago, but you don't have to read it.

"Apt Pupil" has already been made into a film, starring Ian McKellen. And "Stand by me" is an excellent adaptaion of the other story you mention starring Richard Dreyfuss and River Phoenix.

Didn't know that Apt Pupil was already on release. Thanks for the heads up. I live s sheltered life....seriously... ...and how could I forget Stand By Me.....I saw the film, forgot the title....magnificent song...revived Ben E King's career for a while.....classic puking scene at the pie eating contest....not a bad film actually.....and on second thought Liana might like this one best of all as it deals with a coming of age experience for a group of adolescents....nothing spooky or scifi at all here....no real violence to speak of either.

The "Stand by Me" movie was from the story "The Body" which I thought was fairly good, although "Apt Pupil" was much better - in fact that story stayed with me for a long while after reading it... (I don't watch King's movie adaptations so I can't compare the writing to the films) I haven't read any King since "Nightmares and Dreamscapes" which made me physically ill and I had to burn to escape the toxic waste which seeped from it... The Stand was an excellent read, and probably my favorite of the stuff I read when I thought King was interesting...
