Harry Potter
The Order of the Phoenix is a definite read although monstrously long like the tail of a nasty dragon.
I'm currently reading The Goblet of Fire. I'd put it off for year, but am ploughing through it. To be truthful, I don't quite know whether I'll make the finisg line with this one. We'll just have to see.
I still think that Philip Pullman is a much better writer than J.K. Rowling. The "His Dark Materials" trilogy is excellent. Harry Potter for grown ups!
Harry Potter is overrated. The books are not brilliant writing at all. It's just all the money machines grabbing it and squeezing every last penny they can get.
bleurgh harry potter...
have never read any of them, i just don't get the hype, have no desire to pick em up either, haven't seen any of the films either
i'm hoping that philip pulman's his dark materials get's made into a trilogy of films, they would be fantastic
Isn't the whole point that Harry Potter's for kids? If grown up's like them too well thats fine... but they can't be expecting a grown up novel... that's just daft.
The question is, do kids like them?
Well, my son read the first, but gave up about a third of the way through the second, he then read all 10 of the 'Series of Unfortunate Events' series...
I bought him a 10CD set of Fry reading the Harry Potter book 'The Prisoner of Askabhan' .for his birthday..and he listened to it wall to wall till it was done...complete and unabridged - Fry must be a saint.
I think the Harry Potter series are good children's books which a lot of adults happen to enjoy - maybe it's nostalgia for boarding school stories or spotting the jokes.
The Philip Pullman series is, to my mind, deeper adult fantasy which some imaginative older children will enjoy; I think they're marred by a blatantly anti-religious undercurrent but are still very impressive tale-telling.
I'd like Pullman's talent combined with Rowling's money!
well, what can i say? harry potter took me into another world. It may not be everyone's cup of tea. But as a 29 year old it gave me back something i've missed in my youth.
The first two books in HIS DARK MATERIALS were great; the last was awful. They actually are being made into films, but they're in the beginning stages; it's not even cast yet. I don't think I'd consider it "for grownups"; THE GOLDEN COMPASS was my favorite book when I was eight.
As for the HARRY POTTER books, they're entertaining I guess, but I dislike the main character. He seems cool in the first two books, then gets progressively stupider and stupider.
Yes, and Daniel Radcliffe...ugh - what a let down!!
However, I think it's a terribly difficult character to create and sustain...
Moley...you forgot your capital letters...hehehe...and you aren't supposed to start a sentence with 'but'. But (!) I'll let you off, just this once...you're very young, after all...
harry potter doesn't deserve capitals anyway...
Mind you, your point about it giving you something you might have missed as a kid is a good one...I'm not very good at back to childhood experiences...from books, but I do think if you can get that from something, it can't be a bad thing. Shows you have a damn good imagination...and can lose yourself in something.
Being able to lose yourself completely in something is a damn good attribute in life...I can't identify with people who have no imagination and sense of adventure.
I quite fancy Daniel Radcliffe.
Never Mind...you'll get over it...
hehehe
Actually, he does have a cute grin...I'll give you that...
Me and a friend were saying this (drunk) the other week.
There's something about it him.
And it's not just because he's a wizard...
or a really bad actor...
