johnny cash
I'm reluctant to start the whole country is rubbish (oh yes it is / oh no it's not) pantomime again, but Mr Johnny Cash has just passed away and - the man was an absolute legend! I saw him at Glasto a few years back and - it was without doubt one of the best gigs I have ever seen . . .
It's a sad sad day . . .
For those of you who may be interested and maybe also those that think he was a nobody, this link will put you straight:-
I didn't think much of him as a singer but, like sabelle, I'm no C&W fan. However, I believe he was a great campaigner for native Americans rights amongst other good causes, so should be applauded and remembered for that.
Well it is a bit more important than knocking the odd song about, innit?
awwww....didn(link is external)'t know that...too bad.
Me neither, I actually quite liked JC. Sad. Can't have been that old, either...
Johnny Cash was a star, whether or not the anti-country lot start trapping off is immaterial. He had a life-long battle with booze and drugs though i thin he'd cleaned his act up in later years. He was among other things a champion of other musicians in battles with CBS, his most notable victory being in support of the young Bob Dylan. They wanted to ditch him early in his career when Cash was a big seller and had some clout. He said 'Ditch Dylan and I go too!' The music world will miss him, so shall I.
What a great shame. His version of the Beatles' In My Life is one of my favourite songs of all time. Frank Zappa'a version of Ring of Fire is pretty good too!
His concert inside San Quentin Prison was ground breaking for conservative Americans - he treated the prisoners as people and with proper respect - something that was then unheard of in those days (and not much better now).
His voice got completely crazy as he got older - and in many ways it got better. Try some of his really late work!
Good on yer, JC.
He had a great voice and a terrific personna, and I
must admit I haven't heard every song he ever sang,
but those few I have heard I thought were really poor.
For someone of his talent and star quality he
deserved much better material. Take the songs they
are playing on the news as a tribute to him at the
moment. They are just plain mediocre, it's only that
wonderful voice that saves them. And I speak as a
country fan.
But having said all that it's still a very sad day.
the passing of mr. cash will be felt through out the world.
i remember while growing up listening to his records.
many will mourn him...we lost a legend.:(
Sure some of his songs (A Boy named Sue for example) are trite and silly but there a lot that are not.
That's the fine line that country music treads - between the maudlin and the inspired. Sometimes you just want a good old weep - and there's no one better than JC for that.
Just listen to that Beatles track, if that doesn't get you going then you must be in need of a new soul!
I'm a country fan, but most of what I've heard of JC lacks a good, classic melody. Lots of atmosphere, but disappointing tunes. Country music should also be tuneful.
I'll listen to him do that Beatles song, but you're probably right I need a new soul.
My hatred of c/w is well documented but Johnny Cash was a legend & his death is sad
"I Walk The Line" was probably my favorite JC song. "A Boy Named Sue" was silly, but it hit the top 10.
Johhny Cash did have a serious drug and alcohol problem, but he'd been clean and sober for many years. He died at age 71 from complications of diabetes. There may are may not have been a connection. He had a lot of general health problems. I saw an interview with him not long ago on Larry King. His last album got a lot of rave reviews, but he had great difficulty singing because of his health, so it took ages to record.
He was certainly a talented guy and from all reports was a decent sort as well. Too bad he died relatively young, but he did have a 50+ year career doing what he loved, so all in all, he made a good run of it.
Nice picture of him at
Just how i'd like to remember him.
now now.....
