Royal Albert Hall, last night.
That's where I spent my evening, in the company of friends, at what may well be the last concert I shall ever attend by two people whose lives and careers I have followed since the release of their first hit record almost fifty years ago.
The Everly Brothers have been my favourite harmony singers all my life. Their influence is staggering, being the act that both Simon & Garfunkel and The Beatles tried (and failed miserably) to emulate. Obviously both those later acts developed their own styles but they also both admit the Everlys were major influences on their work.
It's amazing they even speak to each other (they didn't speak for ten years back in the 70's) considering the history between them.
I attended their reunion concert, (also in the RAH) back in 1983, and it was the best gig I ever went to, bar none, and I've seen everyone from The Beatles and Rolling Stones to Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen.
They can't quite handle the high bits like they used to, but how many of us can? Albert Lee was his usual incredible self on guitar and mandolin and Pete Wingfield kept up with him on piano, BUT, the best bit was the segment that Don & Phil played without the band.
The ticket price was a bit OTT though. We didn't even buy the best seats but they still cost £65 each (best seats were £95 I think). I sported out a further tenner for the rather meagre programme, (well I collect programmes), but drew the line at £18 for a Tee shirt. That is just plain taking the piss.
