A Widow for One Year - John Irving
I can't believe it took me so long to read an Irving book. This book was possibly one of the best books I've ever read.
And his main character, Ruth Cole, is so engaging. The whole book is so clever, and he goes in and out of his characters thoughts so effortlessy. So hard to do as a writer, but he makes it seem so easy.
And the children's books written by Ruth's father Ted - I feel I've read them, that they were a part of my childhood.
And he wrote bad sex from a female perspective brilliantly too.
One of my favorites, fergal. I love the international aspects of some of his books - in this one, Amsterdam; in Garp, Vienna. The characters - Eddie, Ruth, all of them, excellent portrayals.
A decent movie was made from the first third of the book, called The Door in the Floor – Jeff Bridges was great as Ted Cole.
Irving often writes about writers.
