Will AR/ VR be the last great invention of man?

I've just bought a PS3 for P. The graphics are awesome. Ten years ago, I bought a SNES (super nintendo entertainment system) and I am impressed at how far graphics have come in a decade. I am impressed but not surprised ... I have always been confident in technological advances.

I just can't help but wonder what things will be like in 20 years. Will we really be able to slip into a lightweight helmet and body suit and actually feel like we are in the simulated environment?

Is there any truth in the fear the AR/VR will be the last great invention of man because none of us will want to leave our cosy fantasies? After all if P stays up until 3 AM playing Burnout what will it be like when he actually feels like he's driving the car?

I think not because no matter how good gaming and VR becomes we will always know that it isn't real. It will always be just a game.

One final point. When the Wii 3000 or whatever launches in 2020 and it is actually like being on the tennis court playing, will all the people who actually play tennis in reality be bemused by the expense and technology employed to achieve something they've had all along?

course I doubt people will be thrilled by tennis, I imagine more will be kicking ninja's asses and shooting nazi's, not something you do often in real life. nah, something new always comes along. and if you actually develope a game to where it feels like ur driving a car, it'll be pretty hard to go 130 mph. i doubt we'll have it down pat by 2020, the wii barely works half the time, but it'll def happen sometime if we don't kill ourselves and blow up the earth in the process.

Give me the beat boys and free my soul! I wanna getta lost in ya rock n' roll and drift away. Drift away...

I think the best use of AR/VR will not be gaming but the virtual office. People can work at home now if they can manage their own workload. But too many home workers get up late, shuffle around, watch some daytime TV and send a few strategically timed emails to their boss to make it look like they're working hard! Apart from that I believe human interaction is often an essential part of our work. We bounce ideas off each other and ask opinions. If I could plug into my virtual office, I could move to a gorgeous semi-rural haven! And think of the amount of traffic problems and train overcrowding it will cut. jude "Cacoethes scribendi" http://www.judesworld.net

Gosh Jude. I have been researching along this line for some time now. Much of that time has been spent researching the physics of the most established emerson grids on the Internet and on a privet server. I found that on one grid in particular where the end user has been given access to the scripting language, the creative output is amazing. I came across many virtual offices. Some belonging to large corporations, but in most cases they were their to represent the brands in vr. An interesting use of vr's, is macromeadea. The scripting and filming of virtual movies. I'm told the the people responsible for CSI did a murder scene in vr where the end user became part of the investigation. The Avi's, the emersive suites and much of the rest of this technology is becoming more advanced in leaps and bounds. Not long before the 2D Internet is transformed by this technology! As you say Jude, apart for the sex industry, the most applications for the moment are in persons to persons, office to office communications. Another step forward in this field was recently demonstrated by Microsoft, 'I think it was Microsoft', where they demonstrated person to person holographic communications. Was an impressive demonstration. Other areas of research in to this technology is in combining it with say, Microscopy. Tapping straight in to that part of the Brain responsible for visualization, 'We' could walk around microscopic living cell's. Now wouldn't that be interesting..
Ha, ha, ha! "apart from the sex industry"! If a VR Wii could get me a date with Russell Crowe every night, I'd take out stock in the company! :D
:D
As long as it gives me good orgasms!! Oh dear! I think I ruptured my pomposity.

The BIG invention mankind hasn't cracked yet is the wireless transmission of energy, yet it never seems to get talked about. I remember reading somewhere that Mendeleev thought he'd cracked it but then he died.
