GLACIATION
James Fountain
James Fountain was born in Hartlepool in 1979. He lectures in English Literature at Peterborough Regional College, and recently completed the first PhD thesis on the life and work of Scottish Modernist poet Joseph Macleod (1903 - 1984). He has written various articles on this subject for the Times Literary Supplement the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography and published articles and essays on Spanish Civil War literature and other aspects of modernism for various scholarly journals. He is author of the autobiographical novel Out of Time (Book Guild, 2006).
“The Glaciation sequence is a beautifully sustained piece, delicately and deftly using geology and landscape to describe the emotional complex of a relationship. I think what I liked most about it was the way it used huge, overwhelming natural forces of erosion and pressure to describe the intimacy of human contact - the sea kissing the cliffs etc, many beautiful lines.”
Gerard Woodward
“There is something in Fountain’s writing which reminds me of G.S. Fraser, Ian Hamilton, and even Edwin Muir, particularly in the terseness of the shorter lyrics. This poetry avoids the mainstream and is fiercely independent and original, containing great power, intelligence and imagination.”
