writing in different styles

Although I have posted quite a few poems recently I'm totally undecided as to whether I should follow a style or just write as I observe.
Yours curiously

I guess what makes a good poem for me, that is my perception of a good poem, is if it is real. I like stuff that comes from the heart and touches you in some way. Allen Ginsberg gave this advice to his students. He told them that if they want to be good writers then they should write with complete honesty. Honesty man.. keeping it real.. Everyone is like a leaf on the story tree and we all have our own stories to tell. That only we can tell, so tell your story creatively and with honesty. Theos bless funky_seagull

Write what you want and what you know. It doesn't matter what style. Write in the style that you feel suits your story. If you write in short, choppy sentances, that shows something about the topic. If you write long, metephorical sentances as your stanzas, readers will know that has some sort of meaning. I hope I could help. -Brianna

I think you should write the way that you feel - I've done stuff in various styles, and even though there's one style I end up using more than the rest, I think it's more important to write in the way that feels most appropriate at the time. Follow your heart and all that!

Almost finished your first set - congrats - I've got quite a few to go. I really liked 'Mobile Phones' - surprised you didn't mention people sitting in pubs opposite each other both on mobile phones to other people entirely... 'Tiny Mouse' is cool too. One thing - there seems to be a lot of space before your pieces start - are you cutting and pasting them or hitting return when you're typing them into the box?

Hi Emily, Glad you liked 'Mobile Phones'. It seemed a strange topic to write about really. I have had a mobile for the last seven years and use it all the time....admitedly not on the train etc! I'm not sure what you mean about the space before my pieces start. I type them in Word save them as Text Only to disk and download them straight from disk.I'll try another way to see if it makes a difference.

I think both. I've written great pieces that just flowed from the pen, but I've gone back to them and tightened them up in to diff styles and created entirely new pieces that I've loved for diff reasons. They have hardly resembled each other in the end. It doesn't always work, and i go back to the original with relief, but its a good disciplin excercise, and if you want to make money from writing for specific audiences then you need to be able to tailor your writing.

Hi All, I'm relatively new to poetry too and trying out different forms and genres. I feel happiest with the more 'structured' formats, I love the challenge of finding just the right words/sentences/meanings. I need a framework, otherwise I get lost and start rambling. I started out with lightweight verse, more entertainment than thought provoking, though I am trying more serious stuff now. Haven't got a clue where it will lead me in the end! What I find difficult is how to judge whether a poem is good. (Quality wise I mean) Getting meter and rhyme exactly right does not autmatically create a 'good' poem, because it is something you can learn, but how do you judge the contents? Can someone tell me? Or is it totally subjective? Being Dutch may be a disadvantage here, though I am quite at home in English. Reinardina.

Hi all, I guess there are different types of writing styles..it could be introspective, reflective, biographical or autobiographical. One can write from self-experience and then build it into a story or one can imagine something and write pure fiction. What style one chooses basically depends on what one one wants to write--a poem, a novel, an essay and what he seeks to get out of it. In other words, the subject of the book, the objective of writing the book and the kind of audience one is writing for. Nidhi
