The Squid and the Whale
I saw this film this weekend. I do not know where to begin with how good it is. The dialogue is spot on, hilarious, excruciating. The characters are complex, believable and are treated empathetically, even when the audience can seem the repressing, rejecting, obsessing, projecting.
The acting was amazing. I was very moved by the elder brother's allegience with his father - played without fault by Jeff Bridges - and how, really, at his core he missed his mother and had fonder memories of her.
It is the best film on the subject of divorce that I have ever seen. Anyone agree?
Agree completely.
It is awesome.
I am not so sure that saying I enjoyed it is right.
The combination of the dialogue and timing is excruciating.
Darkly real. Made me feel like I was sitting at a best friends dining rom table trying to quietly eat a roast while the parents took another step over to themepark divorce.
Loved the sentiment at the ending but because I thought the oldest brother's character was in essence a total knob, I felt it somewhat spoilt.
I know we are supposed to think he is a knob and be moved by his self actualisation and actual emotional simplicity, but I wanted to ignore him. Forever.
But in short yes everyone go rent.
The video shops are waiting for your brain.

I really got the older brother... and I did dislike him all the way through, until I recognised in him something very much like my younger self when my parents were divorcing.
He goes on about how great his dad is because he is projecting his love of his mum onto him. He is in denial, and comes across as pompous, but that is because he is hurt, and doesn't want his mum to hurt him.
I thought the scene with the Psychiatrist when the eldest son has his favourite memory of childhood (won't give it away) was very moving and it made me cry. I identified with it so much, which was great because I'd been really pissed off at the oldest son all the way through - and then saw he was me. Arghghh! Clever film making.
Something that makes you laugh proper belly laughs and also cry has to be good entertainment. So yeah, watch it!
