Is dying on Christmas day a good career move?
He certainly left his mark on soul music, there's no doubt.
RIP
What will his family do with all the presents he was supposed to get, I wonder? If there's anything expensive in there, I'll take it. I could use the dosh.
I've always said this to friends who do their Christmas shopping in June - "But what if they're dead by Xmas? Surely, it's better to leave it 'til the last minute."
Seriously... what a huge loss. What a thing to wake up to on my clock radio this morning.
I have written about James Brown on this site and called him the greates black artist ever. Missi disagreed, but someone wrote in The Independant that he was the greatest artist of the 20th century. And that primal scream of his, that seemed to go to the very depths of man himself. I was lucky enough to see him in concert twice and shook his hand. I still haven't washed it yet. To witness his band kick in with that familiar riff, and watch the crowd rise as one just unable to refuse (even if they had wanted to) the funkiness of it all, lives with me to this day. A seminal moment in my life indeed.
