Money To Burn?

Ministry of Defence's latest estimate is £3.297 billion will be spent on operations in Afghanistan and Iraq.
The forecast for Afghanistan is £1.424 billion while Iraq is expected to cost £1.449 billion! Doesn't add up does it?
Not only that but why on earth is Iraq more expensive than Afghanistan when it's the latter which is supposed to require all the extra kit?
How many troops do we still have in Iraq anyway? 1,499 million quid is a heck of a lot of cash for somewhere I thought we were leaving very soon. I don't support either 'war' so can I have my £50 back please? Is it about £50 for every man, woman and child in the UK - I'm too tired to be sure I worked it out right?
Rough calc 50 * 60,000,000 = 3,000,000,000 so it's close enough.

I don't support the government bailing out of Northern Rock, the Olympics (which I as a Londoner have to pay for) or either of the wars so can I have my £2083.80 back please? jude

I don't support the government, or the silly things you strange contributors do. that's why I live a humble and frugal existence. Thanks for my life back. mwhahahahaha Oh dear! I think I ruptured my pomposity.

Re-reading I realise that I didn't make it sufficiently clear that the 3.3 billion is the revised estimate for this years expenditure - not the cost for the whole of both 'wars'. Why are we there I seem to have forgotten? Was it WMD and opium? No of couse there were no WMD in Iraq and opium production in Afghanistan fell drastically under the Taliban as they threatened to cut off the hands of anyone found growing it. Ah, of couse that must be it - we're there to give Iraq WMD and to get the opium prodution back on target in Afghanistan :O)
If you work out how much it costs to keep our 4,100 troops in Iraq for another year it works out at over £7,000 a week for each and every man. I don't know what they get paid nowadays but it can't be footballers wages and petrol and sand-witches should be cheap... If we brought a thousand back would it save us a million quid a day?
