Juliet, you are buiding the tension nicely, can't wait to see which side wins! Just a few typos, but this sprung out at me:

'How are you doing Elle? We have at least a four hour drive, then at first light a long trek, are you rested, is the baby ok?'

Was Petal once called Elle?

sorry about the Elle thing - it is just on the edit (see chapters 01-03) I have introduced this as a nickname, increasing the detail and realism - but obviously for the lovely people like you who have been reading the original edit this must be confusing. Juliet

Have you read Kazuo Ishiguro's "Never Let Me Go"? just saw a review of it in last saturdays Guardian review. I mention it because the theme seems to have some similarities with your book. Ishiguro and John Mullan of UCL have a public dicussion on March 22 in London, 6.30 pm email book.club@guardian.co.uk

Yes, both the Handmaids tale - Atwood and Ishiguro's Never let me go are the two books that directly inspired XY - i love books that take an alternate historical viewpoint and then play with what happens. Being able to write as well as that is another story, but they say practise makes perfect, so i just keep practising. thanks for the link Chimpy i will check it out. Just to clarify for any confused readers - Xy is having a rewrite so chapter 25 has disapeared for now. however chapters 1-9 are posted - and i am adding aproximately 3 new chapters a week.
