OCD
I suffered from it for thirty years. You have no idea how it ruins your life. Eventually got over it with prescription drugs and a holiday in San Francisco. Still got a bit of residual.
I'm obsessive about checking I've locked things and turned things off. So is Dad. Is it nature or nurture? Who knows...
No drugs, just friends who are supportive/rib me in the right balance!

In general, whatever the problem, once people finally stop looking for a potion or pill that will magically solve all their problems and realise that life is about finding out what works for you, what helps and what hinders, and develop coping routines, then things begin to steadily improve.
What we call mental illness is just a classification system for 'problems with living' and behavioural deviations from a defined norm. Thomas Szasz writes very eloquently about the myth of mental illness. I briefly did into the subject in my latest essay http://www.judesworld.net/suicide.html(link is external)
(this is quite long so only look if you are interested in mental illness and suicide!)
