Kindle, Amazon and self publishing

Does anyone have any views on the self publishing service Amazon is rolling out via its Kindle device?

Amazon will take 65 per cent of the proceeds which sounds high.

Presumably that means the author keeps 35 per cent, which is certainly more than they would have received if they had had a contract with a traditional publisher, but a lot less than if they had published their work as an ebook.
