words and pictures

Mostly this week I've been eating damson jam and thinking about these three experiences:

Hearing about the super density salt lakes edged with banks of mussels in the bottom of the ocean in a radio 4 programme about a TV programme filled me with spectacular pictures. I didn't want to seek out the TV programme for fear of disappointment.

I watched a National Geographic programme about caving and low and behold they went down into the Lechguilla caves that I had read about in a Tim Cahill adventure book. There was no way that what the TV portrayed matched Tim Cahill's stunning descriptions. These gave me a huge resource bank of pictures in the mind.

The third experience is reading the story "Birdie" by Willaim Wharton and loving it's imagery and then seeing the film. The film was a completely different landscape to my imagined one but I loved that version too.

Anyone else have a debate to add between the world of words and pictures?
