It's All Over Now Baby Blue

Evening All.

Well my lovelies, Its sure a cold night in old Walthamstow. The heating is on full and I am three feet thick in sweaters. I have a nice bottle of Chardonnay on the go and the obligatory packet of Silk Cut opened. I'm in a fair mood; work is tough but rewarding at the moment. Miss Rickie Lee Jones is giving me all sorts of grief about her Sunday night gig, but I am more heart warmed about the Great Ormond Street children’s performance that is occurring on our stage just a few hours before. Rickie my old sausage, you will just have to wait a little bit longer for your sound check. Sometimes oh great one, whatever your reputation, talent and kudos not to mention a wondrous past the fact is you will just have to wait. There are lives at stake here baby.

Opps, I was digressing (god its cold), I'm pretty relaxed anyhow and traipsing through my music collection (I have all formats, vinyl, cassette, compact disc, mini-disc and MP3) and tonight’s theme if you care to join in is cover versions.

I am drawn tonight again and again to Lloyd Cole's sublime version of Dylan's 'It's All Over Now Baby Blue'. Now Bob Dylan, without much doubt in my mind is one of the great twentieth century poets and hopefully many of you will agree. Why our very own Mississippi George swears and lives by him, which in my opinion isn’t a bad thing at all. I love the romance and devotion to heroes don’t you? I still have a massive obsession with Kerouac, even though if I know he was good, but hey, not that good.

Christ, I am going off track again. Anyway. Lloyd's version of the song is wonderful, slicing the emotional resonance of the lyrics and melody with a honey-coated sickle. Dylan rarely does this (of course he does dammit, but not tonight) and other people generally interpret his work better than he (I can feel I may be in trouble here and the rusty knives will be out before dawn), which is fine, he still stand tall above most.

The point is, what is your favourite cover version and why, (The why is important to me here I feel). There are thousands to choose from.

'Moves from wine to whiskey'

A final thought, Lloyd's take on Cohen's 'Famous Blue Raincoat' beat his hands down.

Cheers

Ralph

'There are lives at stake here baby.' ... and you are talking about a Theatre Show. You do say the most outrageous of things Ralph... no doubt that you really feel these things but it just shows your EI is all over the place..... Watched the Comic Relief episode of 'The Office' a couple of nights ago... and if you carry your forum personality to your workplace, I can see where Ricky Gervais gets his material from (know him well, do you?)....

No spider, My father has Leuakeima. The afternoon show is is in aid of children who have this disease, if money is not raised then the worst can happen. Is that ok with you? Chers Ralph

I have to say, pegleg, it's a rather mean-spirited comment for this time of year, and you deserve a good wigging for it, so here goes: Yes, it's a SHOW, but it's a show for CHARITY, a CHARITY whose aim it is to fight a disease that KILLS people. Therefore there ARE lives at stake. RESEARCH + FUNDING FROM CHARITY = POSSIBILITY OF HALTING OR EVEN STOPPING DEATH from LEUKAEMIA. RESEARCH - FUNDING FROM CHARITY = LESS CHANCE OF HALTING OR EVEN STOPPING DEATH from LEUKAEMIA. Now do you get it? Or do I need to speak more slowly...?

Hmmm I think so... let me try and give it a go:- I SELL PUPPETS... FOLLOWING WHICH I PAY TAXES. TAXES SUPPORT THE NHS LET ALONE ALL THOSE ORGANISATIONS IN THE 'CARING PROFFESIONS' BOTH AT HOME & ABROAD.. THE NHS SAVES LIVES, DAILY... EVERY MOMENT.. AS WE SPEAK.. THUS: SELLING PUPPETS = SAVING LIVES Which makes me damned proud to be a puppet salesman I can tell you. Oh Sh.it... SELLING PUPPETS = FUNDS WARS = KILLS PEOPLE Can I look the next kid in the eye when I next sale a puppet? It is a funny old world I can tell you...

I'm with you there. If we all stayed at home in bed all day we wouldn't fund good things or bad things, so whatever happened in the world wouldn't be our fault. I'm doing that.

Spider I used to manage the Little Angel Puppet Theatre in Islington. They often buy puppets from individual makers such as yourself (I bought many for the theatre whilst I was there) and they sell them on for you. Give them a call or look at their website www.littleangeltheatre.com(link is external) Its good helping people isn't it Spider? Cheers Ralph

Why.. Thanks Ralph... but I don't think my puppets are good enough for the Angel Theatre.. You see, they are not the crafted and sometimes dark characters beloved of theatre enthusiasts and collectors (me too).. They are silly little things made of polystyrene and felt... cleverly strung so that they are lifelike and easy to animate... hence accessible to and beloved by little children... no doubt they help to 'KILL OUR ENVIRONMENT'.. but they also help to farm little imaginations and that makes me happy if not rich.

Hallelujah - Jeff Buckley is an obvious one. Also really like another version of It's All Over Now Baby Blue by Hole. More surprisingly good, from my point of view, is a version of the Bee Gees' 'To Love Somebody' by alt-country types, Slobberbone.

How about Stevie Ray Vaughan's version of the classic Hendrix "Voodoo Child"? Of course, Hendrix did Dylan's "All Along the Watch Tower". Judy Collins singing Phil Ochs' "Suzanne"(and didn't she sing another Ochs song, "There But for Fortune"?, or was that Joan Baez?). Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young singing Joni Mitchell's "Woodstock".
