Talecatching

Information about Talecatching, ABCtales.com's major new project to work toward tackling social exclusion through creative writing, is now online at the link above.

Please read and comment on it, as it represents the 'other half' of what we are aiming to achieve through ABCtales.com.

Any suggestions, questions or thoughts would be massively appreciated.

The project sounds very exciting. I think my first question would be, has anything similar been done before and on what scale? I was once sitting in an inclusion unit in a school taking care of a young girl whose father was in prison etc, she rarely put pen to paper. Somehow or other I got her to write me a poem by giving her a pile of picture cuttings I'd brought in. She kept the poem, it was a small window into her soul. After that she always smiled at me in the corridors and worked in the classes I had her in. If that doesn't tell you something about empowerment through self-expression, nothing will.

We did quite a bit of research into similar projects for the study. The short answer is that there are a lot of good creative writing projects designed to tackle social exclusion and a number of projects which try to tackle the digital divide. As far as we know, their hasn't been any that aim to do both at the same time, until now. ABCtales, with a thriving online writing community already in place, is uniquely placed to be able to attempt this but as a slimy Prime Minister once said: "much done, much still to do"
