Let's Be Friends (and Swap)

Hey reader,

I'll get straight to the point; I'm insecure. I've never created my own Forum topic before. So, this is a little bit of a stretch for me...and, it took me a while to even muster up the courage to write one. But now that I finally have, I’m going to use my newfound “powers” (courage) for good. To save the world. To change lives. To...swap!

I have posted works on this site and I’m virtually certain you did too. And I was wondering if you would like to swap with me. I would read, comment, and/or critique any of your stories, chapters, or poems. And in return, you would read one of my short stories:

But, of course, you don’t have to take up on this time-consuming offer…but, it would be appreciated, helpful, and you never know, maybe a little fun. Well…maybe not fun. But, reading my stuff and liking it or hating it — and more importantly, saying so — would perhaps make me a little less insecure.

Thanks Stan! I've thought of that before and you're absolutely right. Tastes do differ and that. However, I found this swapping idea elsewhere and it seemed to really takeoff regardless. So, I supposed that maybe someone here would like the idea too. Still, it was merely a suggestion and life goes on... By the way, glad you enjoyed "Abigail".

well done for posting this. i wish more different people would get on the forum! i'll have a read of your stuff next week - finished work til tuesday now. no need to read mine - i havent exactly been treating the site as seriously as i might.

Oh, thank you alice. I don't expect you — or anyone and everyone — to particularly like my writing (although it would be fantastic). Hating it or simply not favoring it is expected in perhaps the same degree as those who do enjoy it. But thanks again for taking the time in reading over some of my stuff! Gladly appreciated.

I know exactly how you feel, Jessica. Every time i post a piece of my work here, my insecurity blossoms, but I believe that any comment is good. Just as you have said, I'd rather hear that someone hated my work than not. The swapping idea is great and, if anything, is a helpful way of getting more reads on a site where a piece can sometimes get lost. I do agree with Stan, though, that sometimes it really does come down to taste. I'll take some time soon to read some of your work! All the best, Steve.

And I'll be your friend too, Jess (Abigail?). Anything you want me to look at, read and appraise, I'd be happy to do so. It seems every time someone asks for advice they get the same response - "Comment on others and they will comment on yours," or words to that effect and it gets a little tiresome. I don't know what the big deal is, but I do know some people don't feel comfortable about commenting on others' work, maybe becuase they're not confident, afraid of offending someone if they're too honest, whatever the reason might be. And yet they still would like for opinions on their own work. Nothing wrong with that, we're all different. I think we should all be more charitable. Let me know what you would like me to read. Trev

Hey sue! First of all, there seems to be a little confusion with my name... It is Jessica, not Abigail :P Just to clarify if need be. I don't know if I'm the one to say, but, maybe it's due to the fact that it's merely time-consuming or, as people above had mentioned, the difference in tastes — not just in writing...that excuses the interest to partake in the swap. At any rate, you're welcome to read anything I've posted on this site. And I'll find time to return the favor. :)
