Bruce Robinson
Dear All
Has anyone read 'The Peculiar Memoirs of Thomas Penman'. I thoguht it was supurb and it made me roar with laughter and weep like a baby.
This country's most underated writer.
Your thoughts please.
Ralph
I agree entriely. A friend gave me this book for Xmas last year and a spent the holiday engrossed in it. I laughed and was deeply moved too. One of my favourite lines is close to the start when the story is being told about how his grandfather came to have the top of his head blown off. He sees a tank for the first time, and the bay Robinson describes it is brilliant - "it was like an elephant in an idiot's dream".
I've since read Paranoia in the Launderette asnd have his most recent book (not yet published) on my Amazon waiting list. But if you get it first - let me know!
(If there are spelling mistakes in this message, it's because the text while I write this is tiny and barely readable.
Hi Dany
It is a brilliant, brilliant book.
\the line I love and still makes me tearful with laughter is.
'Its A Mallard'
Other readers will have to buy the book to understand this and I urge them too.
I also really love 'Paronoia in the Laundertte'.
I did not know that Bruce has a new book out. What is it?Whats the skinny?
There is a book called 'Don't Smoke in Bed, Conversations with Bruce Robinson' . Its a set of interviews with our man. Very funny and serious by turns.
I love him, he is so underrated.
Cheers
Ralph
Hi Ralph,
I will check on the title of the new book and let you know. Meantime, I'll check out the interview collection - Don't Smoke in Bed" on your receomendation.
Of course, he also wrote the scripts for "Withnail and I" which bears repeat watching. There was also an interview with him in the MArch 2001 issue of Dazed&Confused magazine.
Jill (Dany is just my writing name)
I've never heard of him, but I've ordered the Peculiar Memoirs.
I loved Withnail, so I'm looking forward to this...
Thanks for that you lot
