I read Stephen King's 'On Writing' a while ago, which is a non-fiction thing about the mechanics of writing novels and stuff, as well as having some memories of his life and things. I recommend it to any aspiring writers (hmm, any here?) because it is refreshingly honest and not full of any s***e about muses or anything.
Thoughts, anyone?
I bought the audio version from audible.com, which is narrated by King himself.
I agree, it is a wonderful book about what it is to be a writer, plus not a few useful tips. I especially benefited from the part where he says that in writing dialog, simply say "he said" or "she said," rather than straining for colorful adverbs to described the way it was said. A little color now and then won't hurt, I think, but he's right....if the dialog itself and the situation do not convey the manner in which it was said, then the scene probably has more problems than what can be fixed with a colorful adverb.
It was also very inspiring, at least I found it so.
Yeah, he had a lot of inspiring tips - the part I liked was about the writer's toolbox - very origional!
