I love the massive English early morning heart attack. Can't beat it - with own speciality - garlic mushrooms in baslamic vinegar, butter and and my now not so secret ingredient, whisky. Oooh, I'm starting to slaver...
Lazy humour I call it. You get it in TV and movies all the time... just look at Friends, for example, whenever it did those flashbacks to Monica scoffing all the time and being oblivious and doing her 'fat dance', or in that Road Trip movie, where the little guy loses his virginity to a fat girl and the way it's directed and filmed is just to get the audience to go ,'Ewwww,'... as if it is repugnant and morally reprehensible for a person who is overweight to even *think* about having sex, let alone be shown having it...
AND (I'm sorry, but I feel a rant in order, I can't help it, this is 'my' topic here)....
You know why I could never say East is East is a really good film? Becuase it *is* a brilliant film in loads of ways: it plays against stereotypes, questions attitudes, engages interestingly and intelligently with its audience with ideas of race, culture, peer pressure, humour, sexuality etc etc...
BUT: Who is the butt of the jokes? the fat girl.
Who is overtly sexual all the time witout realising how 'repulsive' she is? The fat girl.
What do the audience do when it transpires that the 'fat girl' has been posing naked for one of the main characters' sculpture of the female genitalia..... They go, 'URghhghghhg,' they do... in the middle of a film that challenges preconceptions about everything else - the director goes for a cheep laugh at the expense of a fat girl's sexuality. How dare she have genitalia? How dare she show it to somebody?
I CAN'T STAND IT!!!!
It is lazy humour pedalled by those who haven't got the brains or compassion to do otherwise.
Thank you.
kj - I didn't think you were ranting... I was kind of er....well... er read my post. I have a 'thing' about this (and I'm not fat or 'owt). I did my last post before I read yours....
*smiles in spirit of friendship*
Did you see Welcome To Fatland last night? If not, it was about a 'fat haven' in Mexico, that was visited by a bunch of 'fat' Brits. Their 'fat life coach' was a loud American, whose ethos was basically to turn them into loud Americans, in an effort to combat their insecurities about being overweight. Her preachings were a load of simplistic nonsense that on the whole, were met with stony faces from the Brits. (Although some of them made progress, I fear it was in spite and not because of their'fat life coach')
