Formalities by Jack Cade

I really liked this - tells you so much about Africa (I take it IS Africa??) - corruption, hospitality, in-yer-face religion delivered with a smile and culture shock in unexpected ways, without going into obvious travel story descriptions. Works hard to deliver good original similes for "black" and "white" - although maybe too many references to teeth?

But the picture of going to a poor country to be almost force-fed is very strong and unusual.

kinda like the Constant Gardner. Great job Jack. Congratulations on the chery.

Give me the beat boys and free my soul! I wanna getta lost in ya rock n' roll and drift away. Drift away...

i thought he was in India, perhaps i was mistaken. but i did really enjoy the flow of it all :)

maisie angel Guess what?  I'm still alive!

Yes, congratulations on the well-deserved cherry. I agree Jack, very strong images and tactile opportunities however I believed we were talking about a Caribbean country until we got to the left hand, which I believe, is an Indonesian or Balinese convention. I liked this. I particularly liked: And I’m at it too, to muzzle my horror, like a virgin swallowed up in an orgy, thumbing his way to the door. "To muzzle my horror" is perfect. I'm not sure about the ending though - it felt like a bit of a cheap joke. Nice one. Joe
Cheers, guys. It *is* Africa. I would love to visit the other places mentioned, but I'm too poor to have afforded more than one trip of a lifetime thus far! Re. the ending. I'm going to have to consult my journal about this to see if I've remembered it right (it could be the *right* hand,) but in Ethiopia, you don't shake with your left hand because that's the hand you use to wipe your arse.
