See You in Camden

Today I'm on a different pc from last night, and I can access threads that existed before yesterday, disappeared over the weekend (although apparently not to everybody) and now exist again when I use this pc. How is that? Did I slip into a parallel universe over the weekend whereby certain threads don't exist?

And aside from The Mystery of the Vanishing Threads, I logged on eight times in a row last night, even though I was already logged on, and still wasn't allowed to post any comments. I even logged off and logged on again, but to no avail. At the end of every thread, just as I was about to join in the discussion, I was greeted with the "log on" symbol.

And so to all my hundreds of friends (well, the two or three of you, and you know who you are) who've urged me back to the forums, saying you've missed my comments, I'm sorry, but I just can't be arsed. It's more trouble than it's worth.

See you in Camden

it is rather trying I admit... see you camden luvvie lets 'do cocktails/ mocktails' jude visit my boring website http://www.judesworld.net

Try Mozilla. Shameless plug for Warsaw Tales, available at www.new-ink.org
Yes, try Mozilla. I had the same problem; couldn't log in or post for four months or so. Very frustrating. Mozilla helped.
Seems to me this problem has now been mentioned on at least 4 threads over the last few weeks and STILL no response from the management.

And still, after all these years, still not one post mentioning OS (and version), browser (and version) and ISP. Last time I spent several fruitless hours trying to get *anybody* to pony up this data, it seemed that all of them were using AOL. Whether that's true now I may never know. $deity helps those who help themselves. ---- John H

Hey John, my remarks (here and elsewhere) were directed at Tony and Mark, but since you're the only one who has found the time and courtesy to reply I thank you, and the details that apertain to me are as follows; XP service pack 2 IE latest version (dunno where to look for the number) Tesco Broadband If this info will help solve my problem I'd be eternally grateful. Changing to Mozilla MAY partially solve the prob for most people BUT as you're no doubt aware IE is the most widely used browser, and whilst present members may be prepared to change new arrivals may well give up and go elsewhere. It's obviously to ABCtales advantage to sort this bloody problem out. I have no doubt that you're very capable of doing it but if Tony isn't interested and doesn't ask you to, I understand why it still prevails.

I think this is a recent problem as I was using BT broadband at home and Bluecube here at work with the latest IE - both gave no problems until about 5 days ago when it started kicking me out. jude visit my boring website http://www.judesworld.net

OK, additional question for you both. Are we aware that 'refresh' will often do nothing (if the ISP has a stroppy proxy server) unless you hold in the CTRL key? (Or the Option key, if it's a Mac?) Try that and tell me what the result is for refreshing. And your IE version is exposed if you choose 'About' from the Help menu. ---- John H

I'm IE 6 - I'll try the refreshing with the CTRL key next time it happens - it seems to be okay today...so far! My point was I haven't changed my ISP or browser in months so why would it suddenly start being a problem - at the same time - both at home and work, when both had been well behaved up until recently

6.0 that is

Why? Depends. An ISP might try to use a cache server to cut down on its own bandwidth. All I can do is come up with ever more elaborate ways to force them to bypass us. The reason I know it's not primarily an issue with this site is that there are people here who've been complaining about cache breakage in *all* of ABCtales's various incarnations, all of which handle this differently. AOL's method is particularly dumb, but the national JANET cache network has its off weeks as well, and god only knows what BT/Yahoo/whatever it's called this week is playing at. Re: Burgeon themselves - they don't do this stuff and probably shouldn't be expected to have a clue about HTTP protocols and RFCs and other internet engineering things themselves. As with all bugs, if the tester can't reproduce the error her options are extremely restricted. ---- John H

OK John, holding control works as far as I've tried it, (4 times so far), and the full version number is as follows, IE v6.0.2900.2180.xpsp_sp2_gdr.050301-1519 If as you say, and I have NO reason to disbelieve you, that the problem is the browser, how come I NEVER had this problem with the previous version of ABC? I also note your comment that the 'management' don't/can't fix the prob, but surely they could have either replied as such or posted a message on the noticeboard that all tech problems have to be dealt with in Ireland. It just seemed discourteous to me that repeated requests for help went totally ignored by Camden.
