question for my fellow novel writers
When did you know (or should you know) whether or not your first novel should have a sequel(s) or if it should be a stand alone book?
Coincidentally, I have completed a rewrite of Insanity Never Sleeps and am almost finished the sequel. My old publisher gave me permission to republish Insanity, so I aim to do that with Lulu, possibly next week. I received so much praise concerning Insanity and readers insisted there should be a sequel. Normally, I would not have considered the idea. If your novel is attracting avid readers, then yes, I would personally go for it. Another reason I wrote the sequel was because I enjoyed writing both books. In fact, I am writing now more than ever. Too much sometimes, I think. That you are asking this question Eternal, means that you are fond of the original, so why not write a sequel. Whatever you decide, good luck.
The reason I ask is I'm not exactly sure of how my novel is going to end yet, and I think that will depend largely on whether or not I'm planning to write a sequel.
Oh and thank you very much for the detailed answers
