Compiled by Alice Riley & Emma Robdale (2024) Atypical Love.

Atypical Love is an anthology. Nine writers. Nine stories from  Alice Riley, Echo Darling, Carole Kenrick, Miriam Lohr, Kevin Marman, Zara Relphman, Elinor Rowlands, Lennie Varvarides, Emma Robdale.

What makes it different or atypical is the nine writers identify as neurodivergent. I’m not sure what that means.

‘We use the term neurodivergent + (ND+) to encompass neurodvelopemental variations such autism, ADHD, dyslexia, dyspraxia, but add the plus (+) to incorporate mental health conditions such as: OCD, Emotionally Unstable Personality Disorder, Bi-polar disorder, anxiety/depressive disorders.’

Eight stores and a screenplay to help me understand what that means.

My favourite was Kevin Marman’s Conservatory. (He writes as Harry C on ABCtales and I’ve read it before).  He writes about the death of his marriage. ‘The bickering over nothing really’.

His wife (and cat) have still to flesh out the details. He ponders how this happened. Taking the reader back to when they first met. He didn’t think he needed to go to a writer’s group (he doesn’t) and she was a poet.
