Most of the action takes place in one night inside a tailor’s shop, which doubles as a stage, or in this case, film set.

Chicago, 1956.  Leonard Burling (Mark Rylance) is an English cutter who runs a tailor shop in an area controlled by gangster Roy Boyle (Simon Russell Beale). Burling makes made-to-measure suits for Boyle and the well-to-do gangsters. Mable (Zoey Deutch) tends the front shop, while Burling works in the back.

But his shop is also a drop-off spot. People post payments to Roy Boyle into a box attached to the wall. Roy’s son Ritchie (Dylan O’Brien) comes to pick up payments, and it’s obvious to Burling that he’s having a fling with Mabel, whom the cutter takes a paternal interes. Richie is accompanied by his sidekick, Francis (Johnny Flynn).

Gang war is taking place with the Fontaine’s. And payments are being marked by an insignia, which indicates something else is amiss in Boyle’s kingdom. All of these things are happening outside (offstage) as Burling quietly goes about his work.

Richie arrives with a bullet in his stomach, which brings the outside (offstage) inside. Francis pulls a gun on Burling and tells him to sew up the boss’s son. He saves his life. But that’s not enough. There’s a rat among them. They’ve got to work out who it is.

Boyle has hopes of bigger things. The Outfit, a criminal league of nations, has been keeping an eye on him. If he can sort out the turf war, he’s in and a made man.

Everyone has something to lose. Looks and crooks the part. OKish.
