Panorama: Elderly Care-Condition Critical?
Posted by celticman on Tue, 18 Jun 2013
It’s a stupid question because everyone knows we’ve an aging population and with it comes the blight of dementia. My mum ended up in a Boquanran House and having been behind the scenes in many institutions I know exactly how they work. The product is people. ‘Homes’ are run for maximum profit and that means meeting the barest legal requirements. Panorama had a couple of tricks. One of them was to look at mortality rates. Simple but effective. The problem is most elderly dementia sufferers die in hospital. Do no revive I’d say. The other trick was the old hidden camera. An expert on gerontology (or something) was wheeled in to say how appalling the carers had behaved. The home does 'we regret' spiel and says how shocked they are and reminds the programme makers that those rogue employees have been sacked- to go and work in another care home no doubt. These are the human chicken farms. Panorama also interviewed somebody from the regulatory body. I was trying to put a chain on a chainsaw, but I didn’t really need to hear what he said. As long as it’s not you or yours it will be fine. The odds keep shortening. Dementia or death? I prefer the latter.
