Looking After Mum

A contemporary novel set in the UK about a teenage girl whose life is overthrown one day by a note pinned onto the kitchen cupboard

The story is centred around Amelia and how she deals with the various problems forced into her life, how she still manages to find little joys to revel in, and how she creates and loses relationships. The main protagonist is very relatable to and I think that is why I am persevering with this novel.

Though the novel is not perfect and is still being edited by me, feel free to read through it, as because it is complete you will not be left dangling on a thread, waiting for the next chapter.

My first instinct was to panic. My heart started thumping about in my chest, like a one-man army, and I felt dizzy and sick. I sat down on the sofa, and put my head between my legs.

I went to the admissions immediately, and said falteringly to the young woman at reception, "Um...my name's Amelia Steptoe, and my dad told me to come here, um…"

Looking after Mum: Chapter 4

The first time I met Kirsty Brightman was in year five. I know I described her and her lot as blonde airheads, but look-wise, Kirsty's something different to her Mini-K's.

Looking after Mum: Chapter 5

When Mum asked me that question, my world just about stopped spinning in its orbit. For a moment I didn't find any words to say. Then, I stammered, "Who am I? I'm me! I'm Amelia, Mum!"

Looking after Mum: Chapter 6

Two Years Later... Dad left me. Left us. Two years later and I still had not received any news or word of him at all. Nothing.

Chapter 7 of Amelia's struggles.

Looking after Mum: Part II: Chapter 8

Chapter 8 The first time I met Ruby was completely by accident. I hadn't planned to go into Arabian Nights. It was all because of the conversation I heard on the second floor.

Looking after Mum: Part II: Chapter 11

Chapter 11 Again I found myself sitting at the neat kitchen counters and pouring out tea. After I had stuffed the teapot with tea bags and put it on to boil, I sat back and smiled sheepishly.

Chapter 19 Everything happened really quickly after that. Kirsty and I screamed, “Ruby!” simultaneously, and rushed over to the edge, peering over, trying to see her in the pitch black.

Part III: Chapter 20 It is the present time now, of course – the real present. If you can do your maths ok – even I can work this one out – you’ll have realised I’m sixteen now.

Chapter 21 Once we were outside, I panted, “Where are we going?”
