MMR controversy aside¦

Whilst researching parenting websites, I came across this UK one for The Mother Magazine. It's all very nice, natural this, sacred that etc. but my jaw hit the floor when I read this part of the editor's philosophy emblazoned in bold:

"Vaccination is global terrorism against our children. Quite simply, it is a biological assault against an innocent person. You wouldn't DRINK a vaccine so why inject it into a child bypassing the body's main organ of defence: the skin. The following ingredients are found in vaccines. THINK before you inject! (This is followed by long list of weird stuff that I guess would give cause for concern if you were to ingest it 3 times daily ' but of course nobody does.)

How irresponsible is that? We've got half the world screaming out for vaccinations whilst a comfy, middle class couple wafting about in Cumbria set up a website to scare mothers into turning them down.
My god, said Dave, don't they know anything about history? Don't they know how many children used to die in this country before their fifth birthday due to childhood diseases? Etc etc¦
Nah, I said, (not meaning to make a generalisation about the efficacy of home-schooling you understand) bet she was taught at home.
I then looked down the list of articles and saw, 'The Unschooled Childhood' ~ written by the editor. Ahhhh.

I love the internet, but it gives any nutter the freedom to get on a virtual soapbox and their ravings turn up on the search engine with the same status as respectable professional opinion; you have to weigh their credence for yourself.

As someone who has had polio, and lives with the damage everyday, it really annoys me that anyone would run this sort of unnecessary risk with their childrenâ€™s health and well-being just to endorse their fucked up thinking.

Unfortunately it's a website promoting a print magazine which, if their letters page is to be believed, is read in the UK, Australia, New Zealand, Europe, Japan and Nigeria at the very least. Hopefully, their circulation within those countries is minute. It makes me angry, but you know that the authors would dismiss any criticism as coming from the unenlightened brainwashed mainstreamâ€¦ Hereâ€™s a quote from a letter from a Scottish subscriber theyâ€™ve reportedly received: â€˜I wait impatiently for the next issue. The Mother magazine grows and feeds my spiritual and loving nature. I have two children. My daughter Rachael and my son Ruaraidh, 18 months, who was a little miracleâ€¦ a totally natural baby, unimmunised, organic, still breastfeeding. We cuddle up together every night to sleep and read articles in The Mother magazine. Ode to a natural sleep.â€™ Sounds good doesn't it?

still breastfeeding after 18 months? he must breathe through his ears! You can just imagine the armpit situation on that woman, I mean I'm not averse to 'natural women' but she sounds so hursuit she probably finds tranqualizer darts when she's unblocking the plughole during bear hunting season.
