Novellas. Call for Submissions
Posted by Insertponceyfrenchnamehere on Fri, 04 Jun 2021
I've been sent this by Leamington Books which is run by an old ABCTaler who's very kindly agreed to do a little question and answer session for us as a fundraiser soon. They seem like a really lovely company, so if anyone has a novella knocking around, get submitting!
Submissions of Novellas
From June 1st 2021 we are accepting submissions of novellas. Our minimum length for this submission is 7,000 words, although ideally a novella will be 20,000 to 40,000 words.
Send us the full novella or long short story, as well as its genre and a few lines of description or introductory, to
ambrose @ leamingtonbooks.com
Mark your email subject line with the words 'Submission' and / or 'Novella'.
We'll take it from there, and we'll have contacted you with a response by September 2021.
Simple Submission Process
We want to make submitting work as easy as possible for all writers ― a minimum of fuss.
Therefore we do not require an author bio nor author statement; nor do we wish a synopsis nor any other supporting documentation, such as links, CVs or other material.
Please email the full and completed text of your novella to the above address, along with your name, the novella's word count and genre, preferably on a covering sheet attached to your novella.
If you wish, include a few lines introducing your work, which can be placed on the covering sheet.
We highly encourage submissions from women / working class / LGBTQ+ / and BIPOC writers.
How Long is a Novella?
Here are the word counts of some great novellas:
- The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie by Muriel Spark - - 41,325 words
- Animal Farm by George Orwell - - 27,695 words
- Two Old Women: An Alaskan Legend of Betrayal, Courage, and Survival by Velma Wallis - - 19,558 words
- The Bookshop by Penelope Fitzgerald - - 35,670
- Phaniyamma by MK Indira - -35,000 words
- We Have Always Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson - - 48,140 words
- Brokeback Mountain by Annie Proulx - - 9,135 words
Transformative Publishing
We are an all inclusive publisher and in June 2021 appoint an editor to work with writers living with chronic illness, mental illness and disability.
Our novella publishing programme will create opportunities for people with disabilities in the literary field, as well as people concerned with the issues of people with disabilites.
We seek to publish work from writers living with chronic illness, mental illness and disbaility, to increase representation of disabled people in both publishing and writing.
This does not mean that others should not submit work; we are disability-inclusive, not -centric.
And we want to hear from everybody, from any background.
Where are you?
Leamington Books is a Scottish publisher but we accept submissions in English (and Scots) from anywhere in the world.
Please don't let anything hold your writing back in 2021!
