Woman who had her healthy pet dogs put to sleep

Just saw on the news a piece about some woman who had two dogs in quarantine for a number of weeks – on the news they showed the dogs as being healthy and happy, the people at the kennels pleading with the owner (who wanted to have her healthy dogs put to sleep) not to, that the kennel would try and find homes for the dogs/that they’d grown fond of them – then a few moments later, the dogs were shown to have been put to sleep, as that’s what the owner wanted.
Surely that is outrageous? If it’s wrong for people to be cruel to pets, how on earth can it be right for an owner to decide to have healthy pets killed (because that’s what it is, really – they weren’t ill or suffering)?

Did anyone else see it on the news? (Probably be better off if you didn’t, as it’s not a chirpy thought!)

I can't understand it since there was an offer of re-housing the animals although I sometimes consider euthanasia for my perfectly healthy parents. Have never understood the euphemism 'put to sleep'. Sleep and death are two completely different things. jude "Cacoethes scribendi" http://www.judesworld.net

Oh shit, are they? Oops. ~ www.fabulousmother.com
I didnt think it was allowed. I have oft considered putting my perfectly healthy puppy to sleep myself mind you. I think the most pertinent point of the story is that they were in quarantine for a number of weeks. These days, quarantine is both unnecessary and exceptionally expensive. About time it was scrapped.
If the reason she wanted them put down because she couldn't or wouldn't pay the quarantine bill, then I understand although not necessarily condone. People should consider whether they can and are prepared to meet the financial responsibility of having pets or children for that matter before doing so. Sadly there are far too many people who do not consider this before taking either action. And on the subject of crap euphemisms and irresponsible pregnancy I hate the phrase to 'fall pregnant' which implies a kind of passivity over which the people concerned had no control. People don't just 'fall pregnant' in the same way they 'fall ill' or 'fall down the stairs'. jude "Cacoethes scribendi" http://www.judesworld.net

With you on this, Jude! I think the point here is that, as much as we think we do, we never really "own" pets. Do they consent to our ownership? Ultimately, therefore, their welfare (including whether or not their "owners" decide to have them murdered for no discernible reason) should ultimately be in the hands of organisations who officially have their best interests at heart. pe ps oid ...
