Jeffrey Archer
SOME SAY HIS NEW TITLE 'THE PRISON DIARY' IS CONTROVERSIAL BUT I FELT IT WAS THOROUGHLY ENTERTAINING AND GRASPED THE INTENSITY OF HIS SITUATION. LORD ARCHER IS ONE OF THE FINEST, THIS ONE IN PARTICULAR BEING MY FAVOURITE. AGREE?
egocentric - insensitive - waffle - is how I would sum up the prison diary.
sounds fun, I might buy it after all
I don't think Jeffrey is a great writer but he's reasonably good.
I recommend "Not a penny more, not a penny less" as the best revenge story I've read. On the other hand, I studied "great writers" at uni nearly thiry years ago and, apart from D.H. Lawrence, I don't think I've read a single one since because they're all so DULL!
What is a disgrace is putting the poor harmless guy in the nick just because he told some porkies in court when the streets are full of crims who can burgle, mug and thieve as they please.
One way or another, he's impossible to ignore.
i think you have to appreciate his situation. he is one of the best writers this century.
i wonder what the other 98 years will throw up ...
throw up.....yes definitely throw up...perhaps ad nauseum....
Must say I think he's awful. Have read extracts from his prison diary and feel there's an implied superiority over the other prisoners - as if he's a spy of some sort, trying to work out their minds. I'd rather he went in for some kind of self-scrutiny.
I THINK BECAUSE OF YOUR PERSONAL ATTITUDE TOWARDS THE MAN, YOU ARE PREJUDICE AGAINST HIS WRITINGS. I THINK HE DISPLAYS NO SUPERIORITY BUT IS SPEAKING AS AN OVERVIEW OF PRISON LIFE. I THINK IF YOU ADAPT YOUR WAY OF READING YOU MAY BECOME LESS DISCRIMANATIVE.
I think Archer's a hilarious character and if people enjoy reading his books, good luck to them and him.
But is he self-obsessed cheat and liar? Yes. Does he deserve sympathy for this?
In the extract I read he wouldn't eat the prison food because it looked 'unappetising.' What on earth did he expect?
