Iain Banks...#2
Hello, just a quick note to say I finally started reading 'Dead Air' a few days ago, and haven't been able to put it down. Kept reading well into the early hours the other night! I keep froegtting it's him, it seems a stark departure from any of his other books I've read, at least in terms of all its currnet affairs and pop culture references...read it just for the main character. Wonderfully created!
*shakes head* Please... Iain Banks sucks more than a Bangkok hooker. If it's good, then it must be a 'stark departure' indeed. Discuss.
You're such a bitch Rokkit! He's one of my favourite writers - don't mess. Good to see you on the site again though, even if it is to slag off Banksie (no, I don't really call him that!), you cheeky cheeky marabou.
Yeah. Soz, I was just being provocative. I thought The Wasp Factory was so-so (kind of let down by the lengthy explication of the denouement) and the Crow Road wound me up a treat. I suppose my viewpoint is coloured by the fact I think Iain Banks is a bit of an @!#$. Apparently he does good readings. Maybe it improves with the whole accent thing...
Wasp Factory is my second favourite book, (ever), Song of Stone somewhere in my top ten. I can't really explain why I like Banks so much. Finished Dead Air after reading for four hours til 3am when I finished it, and can truthfully say that it was the most suspenseful book I've ever read. Needed deep breathing for a while after the climax!
Have a lovely Xmas Rokkit (and anyone else reading), see you back in Narch...
Did he write Complicity?? That was bloody brilliant (better than Wasp Factory, I reckon) Anyone into second person narrative (I can't get it enough of it when it's used well) should read this.. there's a great section using second person ..think it ends with someone being chucked onto some railings a la Hand That Rocks the Cradle, ..if I remember rightly. Lovely stuff!..
but haven't read anything of his in ages, mind you..
Has anyone read any of his science fiction?
