p.s haven't been here in a while - figured this would be something to interest some of you, am very confused by the whole new system
Fascinating! I'll go back for further exploration later. I read the Gnostic Gospels awhile back; it's always interesting to read the ones Constantine left out of the Bible, and to wonder just *why* they were omitted...
That's farily obvious. He needed to protect the principle of apostolic succession in order to (ala Mel Brooks in Blazing Saddles) save their phoney baloney jobs. Just like the New York Times: All the News that Fits.

Well, I mean, yeah, but the ones that interest me are the ones that could be interpreted as advocating reincarnation, which wouldn't do for the Church's version of Heaven/Hell as a reward for embracing its doctrines. The ones that describe Jesus as considering Mary Magdalene an equal are also interesting, since in other Gospels she is treated rather contemptuously despite Jesus' kind words for her.
I've always felt a bit sorry for Judas Iscariot and am sure we didn't get the whole picture ...
Elaine Pagels has some interesting commentary on gnosticism
