Neal Stephenson

Does anybody know anything about Neal Stephenson? Anybody read anything by him? Want to share? Reason I ask: I've just been sent a review copy of his new book Quicksilver and it's 900 pages long and twice the size of a conventional hardback. I want to know if it's going to be the ride of my life or if I should farm this beasty out . . .
