shot in the USA

Cranky old Mr. Martin shoots teenage boy with shotgun.

nope, not an old local headline but a coincidence from the States where a 66yr old nutter has killed the neighbouring kid for walking on his lawn.

This is taken from today's guardian:
"Mr Martin had every right to his .410 (11mm) bore shotgun. Ohio does not require anyone buying any firearm to have a permit. Nor does the state require gunowners to have a licence, although some inner city municipalities have stricter rules. Most state legislatures considering gun legislation are seeking to relax the remaining controls. Last year, Florida introduced a law giving its citizens the right to "stand their ground" and open fire, even in a public place, if they feel threatened, and the gun lobby is trying to pass a bill in the state that would allow workers to bring guns into their workplace with or without their employer's consent."

un be-friggin-leivable!

you can 'stand your ground' and open fire in the public in Florida if you feel threatened and you can take your gun to work soon for a little light lunchtime murder... why?

This is one of the reasons why I fled the country. It's being taken over by raving loonies with shotguns. My mum carries a handgun in her glovebox, 'just in case'. Just in case what? The Mexicans declare war on us?
This freedom is embedded in the constitution for the sole purpose of raising a militia. It was never intended to allow people to take guns into the workplace so they can shoot someone they feel is threatening them. The cause of self defence is trotted out regularly. If you carry a gun here, be prepared to use it. Unlike archergirl I fled the UK to move to America.

Yes...I have to dodge bullets every time I walk to my car. It's a regular shooting gallery it is. In Colorado, we have the "make my day" law. If somebody comes in my house and I feel threatened, I can shoot them. Don't shoot them on the porch though, that smear of blood where you drag them across the threshold would get you convicted. The old standby..."If guns were outlawed, only outlaws would own guns." Of course, it doesn't account for stupid people. I say, If guns are stupid, only stupid people own guns." The reason we have it in the constitution is because of the British. We figured it would be a good idea to keep our guns just in case you decided to come back and burn our cities.

I know that in British history books it's called the War Of Independence, yet in American history that I have read so far it is known as the Revolutionary War. The NRA would probably say something like: "If the British government oppresses the people then they have no guns to fight back; if the American government oppresses us we have the guns to fight back." I just wish that gas prices weren't so bloody seasonal.

What do you mean 'IF' the American government oppresses us?
Hmm, I don't recall that the American government has actually oppressed the British recently, with the exception of a few souls who wound up in Cuba. We just infiltrate your culture via McDonald's and Subways. - Come to think of it, maybe that -is- oppression...
Camus, I'd be interested in better understanding why/how you feel the American government is oppressing British citizens. From my view of the road, we simply don't allow non-Americans to determine our domestic and foreign policy. The US not doing what you want us to do isn't an oppression. As a matter of opinion, I also believe that far more people in the world have a stronger opinion of how we should run our business than vice-versa.

Who said anything about the 'us' being the British? Certainly not me, I think you'll find that Ag made that assumption!
So, who is "us" then? Are you black or Hispanic, living in an American inner city? An immigrant farm worker in Southern California perhaps? I know-you're an undocumented illegal alien working in the hotel industry somewhere in Arkansas. Is that it? No…let me guess…you’ve been brought to the US from Korea to work in the Sex industry at a massage parlor in the suburbs of Dallas.

I'll tell you what I'm not RadioDenver...I'm not a fool, who believes that his country oppresses no-one.
No doubt.

RD must point out, the Brits are in it with the USA and all aspects of the war on terror, I'm assuming that's what you're talking about regarding foreign policy. The only time our government seems to speak out is if they're found out. Maybe Camus is from the Middle East or South America? nobody
Norfolk, more likely...
Norfolk? Nah...although I did live quite near to Cambridge once upon a time, of course that doesn't mean that Cambridge is where I am from though now does it!
Everybody is guilty of something. Humans are humans. When somebody thinks their shit doesn't stink as bad as someone else, that's when the problems start. There's two types of people in the world...Those that are part of a problem or those that are part of a solution. Either way, you're the other to the other.

"From my view of the road, we simply don't allow non-Americans to determine our domestic and foreign policy" Domestic, maybe. Foreign policy is another matter though, because that involves oppressing, threatening or invading other countries who might want to develop their own domestic policy along non-USA-approved lines. They can't do too much about Europe, India and China, but small and weak countries in the Caribbean, Suoth America and the Middle East are easy prey. And, unlike Al Qaeda and co, these bastards can NEVER be made accountable.
I don't think my shit stinks, though my wife strongly disagrees nobody
there are millions of different types of people in the world, those that divide the world into two different types of people, and all the millions of other types.

I think in digital.

In binaries more like.

Liana

in that case, there are 10 different types of people in the world, those that understand the binary system, and those that don't

No, digital...Nikon has stopped making film cameras. Millions of types of people? Hmmmm...are we talking blood types...skin types...personality types...? I still see only two types...The living and the dead.

I see only two types, the stupid, and me, and I'm not sure about the second type

You see dead people?
When I'm driving, there are three types of people. Assholes...they are the ones going faster than me. Idiots...they are the ones going slower than me. And me...To the others I'm either an asshole or an idiot. Yes...I see dead people. At least until somebody carts them away.

That's when an asshole hits an idiot.
I meant nothing bad against Norfolk, mind you. It's a beauty-full county. I'm from Florida myself. Don't hold it against me. It's more fulfilling when idiots hit assholes.
I lived in Norfolk for a couple of years. It sucked.

Recently, I saw a report on a Non-US guy that had been living in the US since 1992, had married a US citizen, then fell foul of a 1996 law that outlawed his situation, so he got deported. Now, this guy was married to a US citizen (so he could apply for Lawful Permanent Residence status), ran his own trucking business (thus providing jobs for others) but he sneaked back into the US. And for this the entire weight of the DOHS/INS is fallen upon him.

Why didn't he apply for citizenship, then, I wonder, after the 3-year period? The INS gets awfully twitchy about these kinds of things...
(and she knows iceman, because she worked for the INS for 45 minutes in 1976)

Liana

Bleah! Who farted in here?
I dont know. Don't you have a report on it already?

Liana

Neil dear boy, you're overwrought, go lie down for a bit. I can't think who you are referring to re foreign policy, I'm almost certain the US government forms it's own without outside interference. As for this '...want to develop their own domestic policy along non-USA-approved lines... ', that's about as naive as you can get. Those 'weak' Middle East countries you refer to are mostly stark staring mad when it comes to civilised behaviour. It's in NO ONES interest to let them run amok.
