well, I am quite fond of this short colourful poem even with the imagery of the war. I think this is typically British, as people here cannot resist mentioning it (remember Fawlty Towers "Don't mention the war"?) It gives nonetheless a good description of Bavaria, my birthplace. One could say so much more about this lovely place, but I suppose a few good lines might have more impact. They linger with me still for some time.
Yutka
short and very powerful, Neil. This brought me there, the descriptions, the tone. I liked the reversal of black forest. I liked the way it begs to be read over and over. Well-spotted, Yutka, but the link doesn’t work, and this is deserving of a working link.

foster.
Thanks for your comments. I realised the irony of reading a Japenese novelist in Germany (the opening sequence of "Norwegian Wood" is actually set in Germany too), and that I could use the words "blitzkrieg" and "kamikaze" in the knowledge that Brits would instantly understand them. Bavaria is lovely, and surprisingly cheap, but nice countryside isn't at a premium in Germany.
