Hi all! Please, call me Red!

I’m a geeky scribbler with a love of satire, comedy, parody, history and Steampunk/Victoriana. My pronouns are she/her.

Authors I love, and who have been my greatest influences, include Terry Pratchett, H.G. Wells, Jules Verne, Douglas Adams, Sue Townsend, Oscar Wilde, Dante Alighieri, Hans Christian Andersen and the Brothers Grimm.

I hugely appreciate constructive feedback on all of my work, as well as general polite interaction from readers. It always makes my day. So please, don’t be shy!

Plus, if you do enjoy my work, please consider sharing it!

My Projects

  • Grimm Truths

Why would anyone want a queen’s first-born baby? What if the Pied Piper went platinum? At their roots, fairy tales are bleak and brutal. Those who wish that their life was more like a fairy tale would be shocked to find, should their wish be granted, that the reality they rejected was nowhere near as bad. Even if things turned out for the best, they’d still have a heck of a hard time getting to their “Happily Ever After”. That’s the case with the characters we hear from in this collection. Through a mixture of poetry and prose - with altered perspectives, settings and contexts - readers will experience new twists and takes on classic tales that are both humorous and moving.

  • The Huxley Letters

A Steampunk romance/adventure story, born out of roleplay letters with a friend. The noble-born Lady Clara Huxley, trapped in a miserable marriage, longs to escape through travel. Through her various voyages on the airship Aurora with her loyal crew, new worlds are opened up to her in more ways than one. However, some things still anchor her to her tragic past.Clara confides in an American acquaintance through a series of letters, detailing both her global travels, and her life’s journey.

  • Other Original Works

A range of miscellaneous poetry, one-off stories and other works are also available for your reading pleasure.

Thank you all for stopping by! Have an amazing day!

Letters to CHIP: Santa Claus

An older piece from 2013, and the sequel to the previous CHIP letter from the Easter Bunny. With Christmas just around the corner, Mr. Claus writes a letter to the Council of Holiday and Imaginary Personifications (CHIP), in order to respond to Mr. Floppington's concerns. PG due to the piece's nature and humour, which may make it unsuitable for younger readers. [Image from Pixabay - free to use]

Getting Serious

A quick, spur-of-the-moment poem from 2014, but ultimately still relevant to my life, about whether or not I'll ever "get serious". (Image: "Serious Business" by MCAD Library is licensed with CC BY 2.0. To view a copy of this license, visit https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/2.0/ )

An older piece from 2014: an attempt at an original fairy tale. (Image: "Robot" by sk8geek is licensed with CC BY-SA 2.0. To view a copy of this license, visit https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0/ )

The Monologue of the Evil Minion

(Image from Creative Commons) A monologue originally written in or around 2013. Many super-villains of sci-fi and action films are surrounded by nameless, faceless minions. Here, one of them explains how (s)he got into the evildoer business, and describes a typical day at work.
