The Era of Noily Pratt

from the ABC set nonsense

In the time of the Frozen Earwig, the era of Noily Pratt
I embarked on a perilous journey with a monkey, a goose and a bat
We beckoned the swiveling basket which arrived in an indigo haze
And the driver his name was Fitzwilliam he was mute with a menacing gaze
I suggested he lay off the spinning as we boarded his vehicle d'lune
His response was to shrug his broad shoulders and hawk at a copper spitoon
We paused at the dawn of Skordalia to refuel on a cool red star
I relaxed with a jar of blue onions and the bat had a Cuban cigar
The monkey had business on Pluto to discuss with a cosmic baboon
The bat had agreed at short notice to revel with moths on the moon
The goose was a great deal more cagey few words were broadcast from his beak
And his language was hard to interpret a jumble of Cornish and Greek
I was at ease with my mission to quit the blue planet my will
The weight of want had turned it brown and made its inhabitants ill
Quite soon we were into Tabasco, the heat was affecting my knees
I dropped a short note to my butler to send up some dandelion cheese
On the moon of the Sarsasparilla we were seized by a savage dragoon
He lunged with his meteor umberella and Fitzwilliam fought back with a spoon
We tried hard to defend our contingent but weapons he had an array
I watched feeling helpless and hollow as he carried our monkey away
Whatever became of that primate I shudder to think of his fate
But his glands came up on the black market at a very amenable rate
The most arduous part of our journey was the summit of Baba Ghanoush
We got caught in a mustard volcano and it singed off my splendid moustache
We had to pass over it quickly coz Fitzwilliam was feeling the strain
The smell of sweet almonds a burning as it melted his Marzipan brain
He was almost the same for his suffering but his eyes changed from yellow to green
He broke his volitional silence with a version of God Save The Queen
We diverted to Palus Harissa said goodbye with a Mexican wave
To the bat who flew off with misgivings to his wild Lepidoptorous rave
A bilious wave travelled up from my feet to the volatile depths of my belly
I took a deep breath and injected myself with a booster of horseradish jelly
I opened my mind only to find there a gallon of alphabet soup
And now became now and I became free I had let myself out of the loop
We finally landed at Pesto and the goose disembarked to applause
I said my goodbyes without sorrow and mounted my eight legged horse
I rode down the Tzaziki highway with a satisfied glint in my eye
I whispered a word to my charger and we leapt through the hole in the sky

I like this very much...I do have a temperature, tonsillitis and possibly a plague type virus which might explain why it made sense to me. Could you add punctuation though or explain the lack of it as it seems a bit cumbersomely long to have none at all. I think it would make it a better read punctuated.

Co-incidentally, I have essentially identical symptoms to Doeslittle which coupled with dreams of flying I had decided was probably bird flu :O)
It certainly alters your perceptions though.

I too like this very much and there are just a couple of bits that I think might benefit from a little attention:
“I was at ease with my mission to quit the blue planet my will
The weight of want had turned it brown and made its inhabitants ill” (Might be me but didn’t get this line).

“The most arduous part of our journey was the summit of Baba Ghanoush
We got caught in a mustard volcano and it singed off my splendid moustache” (couldn’t figer how to make it rhyme).

Otherwise, very inventive, amusing and well rhymed!

Yes I agree, not great at punctuation. I need to learn more about it.

I agree with mykle on those two lines - they jar in the midst of a fine, flowing, Carrollesque poem. Otherwise, utterly splendid!
