from the ABC set

'I never met a woman who liked Steely Dan.'
I said it over a drink,
to a male friend.
He reckoned William B would have laughed at that;
although who knows, maybe
there's a heaven,
for writers, dopers, artists and musicians,
where the two Tom Verlaines
know both Rimbauds?
We argued over culture high and low, placed
in the canon by the
least qualified.
We agreed, at last, to differ over what
the goddamn hell art should be -
and drank to that.

I like Steely Dan! I used to love all around her heard or was that someone else? anyway I've been meaning to ask. Who is Cyril? :) Val

Oh Val,you're thinking of Steeleye Span, (very nice if occasionally twee electro-folk group: I have several pieces of vinyl of theirs).

Cyril was a friend I served with in the Air Force, he married in his mid-thirties and died aged just 40 or so. He left a young family behind and his death caused me to reexamine my own life and its priorities. Hence I now have very long hair and am an extremely persistent, if erratic in terms of quality, writer.

Oh that's sad, sorry if I was insensitive. Yes of course Steeleye span! well that's what happens when the old grey matter starts to let you down. *blushing* your writing by the way is far from erratic. Sometimes it goes over my head but that's my problem deffinitely not yours. :) Val

Actually, Ewan, my longstanding first Internet name was Rosedarling, primarily after the song of the same title by Steely Dan, with a tiny nod to Axl Rose. I was 18 when I discovered the WWW.

Still is Rosedarling on Ebay, actually!

Congratulations on being the first!
You do know what what Steely Dan (in Burroughs' Naked Lunch) is right?
LOL
