from the ABC set Smallvilles : Real US Towns, Imagined Voices

Ah finished workin' ten years ago
- fack'ry closed outside Bethlehem.
They's fishin' in the nearby crick,
one day ah'll eat m'catch agin.

They's guys in the barber shop all day,
ah kin talk fr'hours with Jake and Zeb
'course a man alone don't need to say much
jes' talk about sports or the paper they's all read.

Real fried chicken at Ray's Luncheonette
and they's cans and rice in the corner store.
Ah heerd some talk of a Walmart comin'
they's got some dreamers on the zonin' board.

From the Lutheran to St Theresa's
'bout takes an old man a half n'hour;
ah get's free cawfee in the mission
seein' as how ah ain't too proud.

Pretty much keep busy for the mosta the day,
kin' fill all yer hours if ya does it right;
course, in bed, in the dark - an lyin' alone,
the resta yer life kin last all night.

Loved this, Ewan. Quite an art - these accents you do so successfully. Some folks can do 'em, others can't. I'm hopeless.

A poigant last stanza.

A much enjoyed poem.

This is brilliant Ewan. I absolutely love the language and structure of this poem. Each word is perfectly crafted and the harmony of each line is just superb. My favourite lines are:

"'course a man alone don't need to say much
jes' talk about sports or the paper they's all read."

Well done. Magical stuff.

Nathan.
