The shopping list

No likes yet ♦

from the ABC set Geoff's poems

The first thing on my list is a loaf of bread
There’s already a poem about all that
So there’s no more to be said

Next some milk, I’ve done that too
This shopping list is easy to do

Squiggle squiggle can of beer
I wonder what on earth that means
On my mobile the question’s asked
“One is Heinz the other’s beans”

Now seven apples I must buy
For an apple a day keeps the doctor away
I don’t know if it’s true or not
But who am I to reason why

Next some black boys all with handles
Now surely that’s not right
It’s even in my writing
But I can’t read my writing right

So up and down the aisles I go
Can’t see no black boys in any row
An assistant looks at my list of scribble
Trying to control a high pitched giggle

“I’m afraid Sir’s writing is not very clear
We’ve been out of boys for the whole of the year
But we do have bags on a shelf near you
Look again at your list I think they’ll do

There’s something wrong with this list of mine
I can’t read the writing half of the time
So I’ll print it all out on my computer
Putting in shelf order the things we’re used to

Then all I do when I go shopping
Is tick a box to suit ourselves
So what is the thing the store does next?
They move the goods round on all the shelves

I like the playful tone throughout the poem, you've perfectly captured a trip to the supermarket with all the confusion that can come with it :)
