Fool's Gold

Now to lose the comfort
as blighted borrowers mourn their loss,
as winter’s bleak stare compares,
not to the furrowed fields
and shanty huts,
but to the dismissed and uninvited;
those who had little time on the highway;
who stretched and gaped at luck
and whose half chance was at stake.
Understanding the whole
meant making memories last and
….liberating this free soul,
whose cracked and creased spirit
let the escaping warmth drive the unkind on,
made hell a place of the past
and heaven somewhere bought with fool’s gold.
