The thaw

from the ABC set Rainbow World

I melted on the peaks one blue skied morning
while you were still sleeping
trickled under ice heavy from your night's dreams

At an unfamiliar angle I almost froze
caught out by the sudden drop
crystallizing with fear

Other waters had cracked it
channelled a stream together
then glistened in the warmth of their company

Saved by the light curving away my shadow
nudged out of the thaw
to be swallowed by a growing stream

trickle to flow
flow to torrent
white water world to sea

You awoke cold, a shiver
a bead of sweat on your brow
feverishly rounding your nose

To the corner of the mouth, your estuary
tongue tasting
unveiling the past, lifting the life.
