Leech

from the ABC set Something for the Weekend (May 2008)

Leech (18th June 2008, 11.01pm)

One way street,
one track mind,
take not give:
Leech;
that is what you are;
I love you,
but you’ve been a git
so far
in this relationship;
three years,
best friend;
can’t you prioritise,
attempt to compromise,
learn to say no?
(at least try?)
Live life the way others do:
put someone else first
once in a while;
is it so hard
to be unselfish
and thoughtful?
Dig deep, like a spade
through clay:
I question you,
and you have nothing
to say
in your defence;
you offer up only
uncomfortable silence;
(which costs nothing
on YOUR phone bill).
Does it always have
to be yourself
that’s the most important aspect
of everything you do?
Face it, love:
the world does not
revolve around you
(I know it’s a bitter pill
to swallow);
this is the point
at which I laugh
and sound hollow.

I like how the first four lines are so vicious in their intent and the rest of the piece justifies why the first four lines. Very to the point.

Purgation? Good, for getting it out!

Yes. I was angry. Can you tell?

I think I am quite a generous person but it annoys me when people take the p*** and abuse that generosity, especially best friends.

What makes poetic angst more powerful is slipping in more of the mundane as a kind of highlght, border.
Eg the line:

(which costs nothing
on YOUR phone bill).

really lifts it.

Which is why I particularly liked those socks...
