Vodka Girl (30th June 2008, 12.51pm)
Glass half raised,
she pauses to laugh
and I capture her distorted face
in the flash-whitened photograph;
we measure our inebriation
by the number of pictures taken;
another one for Facebook,
public embarrassation.
‘He gives good Vodka
and conversation’,
she says, giggling, nodding
at the captivated attention spanning
her low cut top in eye sensation;
‘What more do I want?’ Just keep
them coming with expectation,
ever hopeful of repayment.
He lines them up,
soldiers in front of her
and she passes me the spare,
hoping I’ll drink with her to
equal measure out the experience;
I sip at a lemonade, thinking
that I’m the one driving her home
and disappointing him.

Reads a bit like a rap. Especially like verse 1 and the way it leads effortlessly into 2. The facebook reference contextualises and makes it of our time. Remind me not to buy girls drinks.

The first stanza is a ripper, Jen. And I really like the last two line of the last stanza. I know his disappointment.

The last stanza is very bitter sweet and works really well, the idea of uniformity with the childlike innocence of the narrator drinking lemonade, but being disappointed that she won't get anywhere. It's a really good juxtaposition.
